Just a short post on a short pitstop in the PRC. I didn’t have high expectations for Beijing…it was only intended as a 48hr stopover on my way to somewhere else.
I imagined some impressive (but overcrowded) landmarks, soul-less shopping malls and maybe a cough from the chronic air pollution….certainly no decent photos. After all these years of travel, I still haven’t learned to leave my preconceptions at home. The Beijing I actually found has some stunning sights, it’s laid-back, friendly, quick to smile, has great food (plus cheap beer!) and had no more smog than any other large capital city.
The mix of ancient Imperial China, Mao-era communism and modern rampant capitalism is fascinating. As is the contrast of the brightly-clad hordes of chattering teenagers with their selfie sticks and the stiff-backed, austere security staff who marshall the crowds around the important buildings.
